Introduction

Imagine a time when life was so certain that when you built a building for your business you were confident enough in the future that you put the name of the business into the very fabric of the building.

This is not a time of mergers and takeovers of globalisation and restructure, this is when life was more local and certain.

There are a number of such buildings around and so this blog is an attempt to record some of them and more importantly a bit of the history of the business which by and large are no longer with us.

If you know something about any of these business please add a comment. You can do this without having to sign up for anything and can be anonomous if you prefer.

Arthur Ellis and Co Ltd

This is Kaikorai Vally Road, Dunedin

While the name on the building is Sleepwell this along with Fairydown were probably far better known names that the company behind these brand names of Beds and Sleeping Bags respectively (primarily accepting that there has been brand extension of both of these but only in later years)

This link http://www.webs4u.co.nz/kaikorai/arthur-ellis.html provides and extensive history of the company which I won't bother to repeat here sufficient to say it was founded in 1877 and still going in one form or another as you can see from the sign over the Factory shop door.

Here is an early advert for the Sleepywell range with a slogan as relevant today as it was then.

  1. Can you tell me if the Arthur Ellis Company has a museum? I have an Everest Sleeping Bag purchased around 1955, which I would like to donate.
