Introduction

Imagine a time when life was so certain that when you built a building for your business you were confident enough in the future that you put the name of the business into the very fabric of the building.

This is not a time of mergers and takeovers of globalisation and restructure, this is when life was more local and certain.

There are a number of such buildings around and so this blog is an attempt to record some of them and more importantly a bit of the history of the business which by and large are no longer with us.

If you know something about any of these business please add a comment. You can do this without having to sign up for anything and can be anonomous if you prefer.

St Josephs Church Hall

This is Rattray Street, Dunedin

An early entry was the Baptist Sunday School building on Hanover Street and it appears that it is not just the Baptists who are recycling their buildings This was once the parish hall for St Josephs Catholic Cathedral and was presumably the scene of many hopefully happy events. Music and laughter are likely to still be a factor as this building is now converted into flats and seem to be mostly inhabited by student types based on my non scientific and very occasional observations.

This is the Cathedral in question

And while this is quite a grand structure it was never built (or in this case completed) as designed with this being what it was meant to look like
Like a lot of churches this one was designed in the shape of a cross and the "cross bar" was never built which was also intended to house the imposing spire. A pity it was never completed as it would have been a fantastic building.

Speaking of the way things were here is a shot of the hall before the greenery obscured the view

You will of course note the cable car that used to make its way up Rattray Street and the fact that it goes around this corner. This was a new inovation at the time it was installed with most cable cars in the world just going in straight lines.

Here is the same car looking toward the church
