Introduction

Imagine a time when life was so certain that when you built a building for your business you were confident enough in the future that you put the name of the business into the very fabric of the building.

This is not a time of mergers and takeovers of globalisation and restructure, this is when life was more local and certain.

There are a number of such buildings around and so this blog is an attempt to record some of them and more importantly a bit of the history of the business which by and large are no longer with us.

If you know something about any of these business please add a comment. You can do this without having to sign up for anything and can be anonomous if you prefer.

W J Haynes Ltd

This is 29 Ward St
In the photo it looks like the name is simply painted onto the building, however the sign on the upper left of the building is for Visual Edge which is now the trading name of the same company and so if it were just paint I am sure they would have painted over it. Anyway having visited the building you can take my word for it that it is "cast in stone"

This is another building to join a small number that has the same business in it all be it with a different name. The Visual Edge web site tells us that they have been operating here since 1943 and they are manufacturers of picure frame mouldings.

Still the original business but with a different name so I am not sure it qualifies as one of our rare breed of continues occupancy or not.
