Introduction

Imagine a time when life was so certain that when you built a building for your business you were confident enough in the future that you put the name of the business into the very fabric of the building.

This is not a time of mergers and takeovers of globalisation and restructure, this is when life was more local and certain.

There are a number of such buildings around and so this blog is an attempt to record some of them and more importantly a bit of the history of the business which by and large are no longer with us.

If you know something about any of these business please add a comment. You can do this without having to sign up for anything and can be anonomous if you prefer.

Dunedin Brewery (Well Park Brewery)

This is on Willowbank
Despite the reference to Dunedin Brewery on the building it is in fact Well Park Brewery

The advert to the left is taken from the Tablet newspaper 16 August 1873.
The Tablet was for many years the catholic newspaper in New Zealand. I am sure they had moral positions on many issues but clearly drinking wasn't one of them.

Refering to the Maltexo company history refered to in the Wilson Malt Extract Company entry we can see the reference to Well Park, although this building looks more like the 3 story malt house refered to rather than a stone brewery building which I think (given it is made of stone) is far more likely to be the building pictured below a few doors down on the same site.

There was another brewery calling itself Dunedin Brewery operating at this time from premisis in Filluel St clearly brand protection was less of an issue when a rival could so blatently put your name on their building.

Finally this entry from Speights web site.
"The Speight’s Brewery has been part of the Dunedin community since 1876 when James Speight, Charles Greenslade and William Dawson resigned from the Well Park Brewery and set up a new brewery in a redundant building in Rattray Street"
Speights of course has gone on to be a national brand in New Zealand and still occupies premisis in Rattray Street.
