Introduction

Imagine a time when life was so certain that when you built a building for your business you were confident enough in the future that you put the name of the business into the very fabric of the building.

This is not a time of mergers and takeovers of globalisation and restructure, this is when life was more local and certain.

There are a number of such buildings around and so this blog is an attempt to record some of them and more importantly a bit of the history of the business which by and large are no longer with us.

If you know something about any of these business please add a comment. You can do this without having to sign up for anything and can be anonomous if you prefer.

Cast in Stone

Once upon a time, not that long ago, life was so certain that business owners thought nothing of putting the name of their business into the very fabric of the building they occupied. Not for them takeovers, brand changes or liquidation but a world where they expected their business to last as long as the building.

I find this fascinating and so I have decided to publish some examples for others to enjoy.

There are many examples of these buildings in Dunedin my home town so I will start with these. If anyone knows the history of these business that I post I would appreciate hearing from you. Feel free to leave what you know as a comment and I can add it to the main entry.

There is only one building that I know of that still has the same business in it that I will publish shortly. If I am wrong let me know. - Update, already wrong on this one as I have now noted another couple, it will be interesting to note the total number in the end.

If you know of some good buildings that deserve a mention, especially if you know the history of the business let me know about that too.
